Why collect cacheted First Day Covers?
Due to the increased popularity of the First Day Cover hobby since the 1930’s, uncacheted First Day Covers have lost popularity, except of course for First Day Covers issued prior to the 1930’s – where uncacheted was just about the only way one could obtain a First Day Cover. The popularity of cachets can be attributed to two major factors:
  • Cachets tell a story about the stamp, and different cachets tell different stories depending on the level of research that goes into producing the cachet. Some cachet makers, like Anderson, concentrate on informative text that provides additional insight into the stamp subject. Other cachet makers produce beautiful artwork that graphically tell a similar story.

  • The USPS issues more stamps and postal stationery honoring people, places and events; thus creating more collector interest.
