How to learn more about First Day Cover Collecting
Join the American First Day Cover Society (AFDCS), which has a membership of approximately 4000 collectors. The AFDCS publishes the journal First Days eight times a year – which contains informative articles about the hobby, cover exchange ads, and advertising by cachet makers. The AFDCS conducts periodic FDC auctions, with the proceeds used to benefit the Society. They also host an annual Convention, selecting a different major city each year. The AFDCS also has a number of Chapters located around the U.S.. Most of the Chapters have monthly member meetings where information is exchanged and covers are traded. For additional information write: AFDCS, P.O. Box 65960-S Tucson, AZ 85728.

Purchase the current edition of Scott First Day Cover Catalogue and Checklist – a “pocketbook” size soft bound catalogue that contains more than 30 pages of articles on FDCs, including how to service your own FDCs, how to make your own FDCs, as well as a “Cram Course in First Day Covers” written by the Late Earl Planty and Michael Mellone. The catalogue also contains an up-to-date listing of U.S. First Day Covers, with “generic” catalogue values – actual catalog values of most FDCs depend on the specific cachet applied to the cover. The catalogue also includes brief biographies of some of the more popular cachet makers and advertisements from cachet makers and First Day Cover dealers.
